This gem of a stream originates in the mountains north of Yakutat with its clear waters flowing from Mountain and Situk Lakes through lush rain forests, and eventually spills into the Gulf of Alaska, twenty-two miles distant.

Teeming with life, this productive stream nurtures Dolly Varden char and resident Rainbow Trout year-round, while hosting both fall & spring runs of wild Steelhead Trout, and King, Sockeye, Pink, and Silver Salmon.

All of our fishing trips are fully guided.  The techniques for catching and landing these fish are carefully explained, demonstrated, and taught by knowledgeable river guides who have fished these rich waters for years. Situk River spring run Steelhead arrive during early March, reach their peak migration during early May, and generally exit the river system by the end of June.  These wild fish range in size from 6 to 25+ pounds and attract anglers from around the world.

Fly fishing is the preferred angling method for fighting these indomitable fish.  We practice a catch and release ethic with steelhead due to the relative scarcity of wild Steelhead stocks elsewhere on the west coast, although you may keep one trophy fish (over 36") for mounting.

It is through our conservative angling philosophy regarding this treasured resource that we continue to enjoy some of the world's best Steelhead angling. As Steelhead move out of the river in early June, Sockeye and King Salmon move in.

These species brighten the crystalline water until late July when the often underrated Pink Salmon arrive.  Silver Salmon take up residence beginning in late August and these spirited fighters defy both current and anglers through the month of October.

  • Fly fishing is the most thrilling way to tackle acrobatic Situk Sockeye, Silver, Pink and even the mighty King Salmon, however, both level-wind and spinning gear are effective in landing these fish.
  • Fly fishing for all but king salmon requires a 6-9 weight rod and quality reel, 100 yards of 20 pound test backing.
  • King Salmon, which stretch the scales to 30+ pounds, will require a rod in the 9-10 weight range, with an appropriately matched reel, backing, and leader.
  • To cover all situations, we recommend both a floating line having 13 feet of high density sink-tip and a weight-forward floating line.
  • Leader material should be 6-20 pound test and flies should be of sizes 2, 4, and 6.
